Prayers
The Lord's Prayer
The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples, and it continues to be said by Christians throughout the world on a daily basis.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
A prayer for cathedrals
This prayer is provided by the Association of English Cathedrals.
Loving God,
draw us on the journey
to the places of holiness,
the places of peace,
the places of encounter,
the places of beauty,
the places where faith has been lived,
your love made known,
your hope held out
in the past,
for the present,
into your future.
Amen.
A prayer in worrying times
Creator God, our anxious eyes look ahead and see rising prices, striking workers and energy shortages.
In the midst of our worries help us find security in your unceasing love for us.
We ask for protection for the weakest, courage for the vulnerable, and hope for the frightened.
Do not let our worst fears come to pass,but flood the hearts of those who make decisions with generosity, compassion and justice.
And so may your children be glad to be alive and turn to you with grateful praise.
Amen.
A prayer for our troubled world
Written by Vaughan Pomeroy
God of all the world,
We pray for the peacemakers, for the seekers of justice, for the people of goodwill who risk their lives to stand in solidarity with those who are disadvantaged, crossing dividing lines and barriers.
We pray your blessing on those who have lost loved ones to violence,and for safety, security, rights and dignity for all and not just for some.
Give us the courage to continue working together for a world of justice, peace and equality.
O loving God, hear our prayer.
Amen.
A prayer for His Majesty King Charles III
Everlasting God, we pray for our new King.
Bless his reign and the life of our nation.
Help us to work together
so that truth and justice, harmony and fairness
flourish among us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
A prayer in thanksgiving for Her Majesty The Queen
He shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. (Micah 5.4)
Majestic God,
whose throne is in heaven,
whose footstool is the earth;
we thank you for your servant, Elizabeth,
your faithful servant,
our beloved Queen.
As we mourn her passing
we give thanks for her witness
of devoted service,
unfailing wisdom,
compassionate generosity,
and faithful dedication
and pray that we may embrace her values
and build your kingdom
today and always.
Amen.
With thanks to the Association of English Cathedrals for this prayer.
Every Sunday morning, a member of the clergy gives a sermon as part of the Eucharist. This often takes inspiration from the Gospel Reading for the day and topical issues. If you missed one, or want to listen to one again, head to our YouTube channel to find the live-stream recording of the service.
