The Very Reverend Andrew Zihni, Dean of Gloucester, said:
“The recent closure of GL1 and Oxstalls Sports Park has affected many people across the community – whether you were a member of staff, attended a sports class, or cheered loved ones on from the sidelines, GL1 and Oxstalls Sports Park were crucial parts of our city. At this time of uncertainty, the Cathedral is here and open daily, offering somewhere for you to reflect and pray. All are most warmly welcome here and at churches across the city, county and diocese.”
The Right Reverend Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester, said:
“It was devastating to hear the news that GL1 and Oxstalls Sports Park have closed. This is a huge loss for Gloucester City and our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by these closures.”
At Gloucester Cathedral we have identified mental health and wellbeing, and young people, as two of our key priorities. We offer a wide selection of positive activities for children, young people, families and anyone in the city. These include Walking Rugby, Gardening for Wellbeing, free family activities in the school holidays, choirs for all ages, and a range of classes which we host for Adult Education in Gloucestershire. While we do not have sports facilities on site, we do have beautiful green spaces for everyone to enjoy.
The Diocese of Gloucester also recognises the importance of sports for people’s wellbeing, both physically and mentally. That is one of the reasons why the Diocese have set up the charity Sportily, providing sports and activities for people of all ages and abilities across Gloucestershire and beyond. If you are looking for a new community to join, or would like to find a place to try different sports then please do visit the Sportily website: https://sportily.org.uk/
We are reviewing how we can further support our city and county to improve physical and mental wellbeing, especially in light of the sad news of the closure of GL1, and welcome ideas and discussion around how we can assist at this time. Please do get in touch.
